How You Can Develop Parenting Skills That Will Help Your Children Adjust Properly To Our Modern Society
|
Parenting begins with the rapport that you have with your kids and a positive relationship that will allow you to parent them with success. Of course we understand the many demands that are placed on parents. Taking care of your family is your highest priority, and sometimes you just want a little peace and quiet to yourself after a long week. If you want to raise your children right, take the time to raise them in a positive manner. Parents need to be determined to not only love their kids but to also do as much as we can for them. Succeeding with creating a positive and loving relationship with our children will be one of the greatest gifts we can offer.
There are no simple solutions that apply across the board when it comes to raising our children. One reason it's so important to establish trust and good communication with your children is so that when it's necessary to discipline them, you can do this in the best possible manner. This type of understanding can help prevent difficulties or confusion where discipline is concerned. It's essential to really understand a child if you want discipline to have the desired effect. As long as the child knows that you genuinely care about him or her, discipline won't be misunderstood. As you may have guessed, or already know, a tremendous amount of research has taken place over the decades. Many competing theories and approaches on parenting strategies have been studied and compared. Punishing children, it's been discovered, is far less effective than positive reinforcement. When you compliment or otherwise give your child positive feedback for good behavior, you're applying the principle of positive reinforcement. Many parents do the opposite, and are always focusing on what mistakes their kids are making. You can't go to extremes here, as some misbehavior has to be addressed and corrected, but in general you want to put your attention on what's positive. Remember to combine the two approaches, and you will see a much more responsive toddler.
One of the worst parenting mistakes you can make is to allow children to break the rules you've established without suffering any consequences. In other words, there has to be consistency between what you tell your kids about consequences and what you actually do when they break the rules. Some parents allow their children to avoid consequences by crying or begging, and this undermines any attempts at discipline. It can be very hard to turn things around once your children know that the limits you set are not really firm. However, if you stick to your guns and stand your ground, then in time they will come to respect that. Remember that in the wider world there are consequences for breaking rules, so it's best if your children learn this lesson at home. You can lay the foundations for successful parenting early on, and that really is the best time to let your child know what is important to you and them. It will only confuse your children if you're always changing tactics on them, so try to find an approach that works and use it consistently. |
