Fire Risk Assessment: A Business Responsibility

As a good businessman , it is your duty to conduct a fire risk assessment of your building or workplace. It is not required, but it is something that a businessman would do if he loves his business. Not all fire deaths are caused by the lack of fire systems. Even buildings with functional fire alarms could catch fire and cause death, and you should be able to avoid anything like it. It's just that, sometimes, fire alarms aren't placed where they are supposed to be - something that could have easily been seen if a fire risk assessment has been done.

Basic fire risk assessment could easily be done. There are just some things that you need to check in order to ensure that you have a fire-safe building. Of course, you wouldn't be able to prevent fire 100%, but you could at least try and have it under control before it could cause people's lives.

Faulty wirings could be a cause of fires, and they have claimed thousands of lives all over the world. Check for faulty wirings, and see if the wires are in good condition . Everything that has wires should be checked, and this includes all computers, all gadgets and all electrical appliances in the workplace.

Junk could be a cause of fires too, as you'll never know what goes in them. Some of them might be toxic, and some of them are just plain combustibles. If you have this in your office, there is a higher chance that you'd catch fire. Dispose of these substances properly.

Offices and buildings would always have a smoking area . Do not allow smoking in other unauthorized areas.

All buildings should have proper fire exits. One couldn't even start to imagine how many people have died from buildings not having proper fire exits. Also, these exits should be well ventilated and lighted, as fires would make it hard for people to breathe and see. If these exits would make it harder for people to do both, then they might survive the fire but might not survive the smoke.

Sometimes, you wouldn't really be able to prevent fire. And when it comes, you and your employees need to be ready. Conduct trainings and fire drills often.

Check if all fire alarms are working and are working properly. Improper usage could break them down, but non-usage could make them sleep in times of fire. Make sure that they are all working and that they could be heard from every single part of the office building.

There are still many things to consider. In light of all this, you should know that there are things that even the most responsible businessman wouldn't be able to cover. When you reach this point, expert fire risk assessment shall be done and paid for. This might cost you some precious operation fees, but it is a small thing to pay compared to what might happen if a fire catches you off guard.
