What You Need to Know about Suspension of Driver's License

With the number of tickets that are handed out to drivers in California every year, it can be easy to neglect some of the severe consequences of receiving a ticket. Many people opt to pay the fines and avoid the difficulty of DMV hearings. This may seem like the simplest way out until months down the line when drivers begin receiving notifications of increased insurance premiums, or are being threatened with a suspended license.

DMVs around the country keep track of every driver via a point system. Most violations that drivers are charged for on the road place a certain number of points on their license. These charges vary between one and two points. Lesser charges that come with a single point are illegal U-turns, crossing double yellow lines, or carpool violations. Major auto accidents in which the driver is at fault, any accidents involving injuries, evading police officers, and DUIs will usually put two points on a driver's license for five to ten years.

Individuals have the option to check the number of points on their driving record at any time within a DMV office. Most states also require the DMV to notify a driver once they have got half of the points needed to have their license suspended. Due to a change in an address or faulty personal information, this is not always the case.

Many believe that points will simply go away after a short amount of time. Unfortunately, based on the type of ticket and other extenuating circumstances, points may stay on a driver's record for as long as 10 years in the many severe cases. The DMV has the ability to suspend a license if four points are acquired in a 12 month period, six points in 24 months, or eight points in 36 months. This means that just a handful of traffic tickets over the course of a year or two may lead to a suspended license.

It is important for every driver to remember to never drive with a suspended license. If they are pulled over for any reason and found to be driving on a suspended license, most law enforcement officers will instantly take them into custody and impound the car. The suspension time may also be doubled for those that drive on a suspended license.

People that are under threat of a license suspension, or have already lost their license should contact a traffic ticket expert right away. Without the aid of an experienced attorney, this problem could quickly spiral out of control and a driver may lose the ability to drive for years on end.
