Costa Rica is a Central American country and it situated near the Pacific Ocean, between Nicaragua and Panama. It is a democratic republic and has always stood for peace.
400,000 Indians have been estimated to live here when Columbus arrived in 1502 and the Spanish conquest began here in 1524 which finally administered it. It has benefited from a democratic government most of the time, with the exceptions of absorption in the Mexican Empire and the military dictatorship of Thomas Guardia (1870-1882).
The economy of Costa Rica is relying mostly on coffee, banana and beef exports. However, nowadays tourism has become an important income resource. The country has developed a strategy in this respect, especially after the main financial crisis of the world. Economical reforms have been applied in the sense of privatization which leads to several strikes in 2003 by energy and telecommunication workers.
Oscar Arias Sanchez won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 when he was president. His diplomatic approach will lead to the end of several civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua. In 2006 he was elected again as president. Not long after that, in 2008 the Costa Rican Government started implementing the Free Trade Agreement.
Costa Rica has shown many times a proof of diplomacy and civilization. Therefore, in 2010 Laura Chinchilla became the first woman to be elected as president. However, violent crimes against tourists have increased but there is a low threat of terrorism in Costa Rica but there is a worldwide threat anyhow.
Maintaining safety is also a duty of the owner. Not wearing jewelries or important amount of money would reduce considerably the risk of theft, muggings or armed robberies. Belongings should be well surveyed at any time, especially in crowded places such as buses. Usually the thieves have simple but effective techniques of distracting their targets.
