The new Apple iPhone 4S has been available for some weeks now, and it instantly proved to be the most successful product launch for Apple, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S sees the addition of some cutting edge features to the winning formula of the iPhone 4. One of the most talked about, and indeed impressive is the “Siri” application.
In this article I will take a closer look at this handy feature.
Siri is the name of the innovative voice activated personal assistant application which is included as standard with the iPhone 4S. Essentially, it consists of voice recognition software which means you can directly ask the phone a question, which it will understand nearly every time.
A set of complex algorithms will then use the most appropriate application to answer your question. Below I will provide some examples of Siri in action.
If you ask Siri directions to the nearest train station, it will instantly open the Google maps application behind the scenes and offer some options if it finds more than one train station in the local area. After selecting one, it will then take you turn by turn until you reach your destination.
You can use Siri to set reminders; for example, you can tell Siri “remind me to buy milk after work”. Siri learns the more you use it, so after some time it will realise where work is. Using GPS, the phone will realise when you have left your workplace, and it will then trigger the reminder.
SMS and email messages can also be sent using Siri alone. Simply tell Siri to write a new email or message, tell it who you want to send it to, and what you want it to say. Siri will then read the message back to you, and you can confirm that everything is correct. When prompted, you can then send the message, and the entire process has been handset free!
Siri is very accurate when it comes to understanding your questions and requests, and really has the power to change the way we use smartphones. It is one of the most impressive features of this handset, and for many it has proven to be enough of a reason to buy the iPhone 4S alone.
