What Is Better: Bag Or Bagless Vacuum Cleaner?

It is actually rather surprising that there is so much debate over this question: Is a bag or bagless vacuum actually better? Before we get right to the answer though, let's look at the basics of each type of vacuum cleaner system and how they function:

The Bagless Vacuum

This popular type of vacuum cleaner relies on a canister and microfiltration system to contain the dirt and particles picked up by the vacuum. Essentially, because there is no bag, the micro filter has to do all of the work in keeping both the particles and debris—large and microscopic alike—contained inside the canister and not emitting them right back into the air.

The Bag Vacuum

A quality bag vacuum also uses the same premise...the vacuum's suction picks up debris and particles and contains them within a filter bag. But then, the air that passes through the filter bag is also run through a micro particle filter before being emitted back to the room. So there's an extra level of filtration that happens with a bag style vacuum (and depending on the number of layers in the bag itself, the filtration power can actually be multiplied many times over).

So there you have it—at surface value, both types of vacuums are able to pick up dirt and debris, but the bag vacuum is able to far exceed the level of effectiveness and efficiency when it comes to keeping the smallest particles contained, thanks to having an extra level of filtration that comes from the bag itself.

There is still a lot more to it, though. Bag style vacuums do have the advantage right from the very beginning. But the additional list of benefits is also rather impressive:

• Bag style vacuums are very hygienic thanks to substantially increased micro filtration

The micro filters on a bag vacuum don't have to serve double duty as a filtration system and a basic containment system like they do on a bagless unit. Because the bag itself keeps it all in, the filter can then do its thing and finely-process the micro particles.

• Efficiency is significantly increased with a bag vacuum

Again, because the bag containment system does the heavy lifting in keeping the debris contained, the separate microfilter doesn't clog itself up practically from day one, become ineffective, and cause inefficiency when it comes to suction power.

• Bag vacuums make for much easier cleanup

With a bag vacuum, all you have to do to is simply remove the bag and place it in the trash. There's no dust cloud involved like what happens so often when trying to empty a bagless vacuum container (open it up, dump it out, shake out the remaining dust and debris, clean up all of the dust that gets all over the place, and then still have to re-vacuum up all of the excess dust that you just tried to dump out...it's a mess!).

Here's the question that so many will still be asking...aren't bag vacuums more expensive?

Not in the long run. Each time you change the bag, you're effectively changing a major filter. The bags themselves are inexpensive and much cheaper when you compare the fact that with a bagless vacuum, you really should be changing the micro filter very frequently to keep it effective. In a bag style vacuum, the micro filters last a very long time because the bags allow them to stay clean and do their job.

The other thing is that a quality bag vacuum will usually long outlast a bagless vacuum due to the fact that is able to operate at peak efficiency, free of clogged filters, thanks to changing the bag on a regular basis.

Again, it's really surprising that the question is still so debated—bag vacuums really do have a strong advantage over inferior bagless vacuums.
