Buying An Used Car - Advice From An Expert

Buying an used car is a risky business; there are many people selling used vehicles nowadays that are only out to get a quick buck, and will happily lie to you to get it. The old Latin saying 'Let the buyer beware' is famous in this market as it is of utmost importance that you are completely aware of what you are paying for before you actually pay for it. Detailed here is some information that should help to prevent you being ripped off when buying an used car.

When you purchase an used car privately, that car is sold 'as seen', meaning that the seller is not responsible for describing all faults with the car unless you specifically ask him or her about them. If they lie to you about a fault on the vehicle then you may have some legal position to ask for your money back, but in most cases there is little that a lawyer can do to help you. What this means is that you must take the effort to fully inspect the car before you hand over payment.

So how do you go about checking everything without any mechanical experience? The easy way is to find a company that will do this job for you. Some car organizations offer a service for a small fee for which they will come and inspect the vehicle on your behalf. If something on the car fails within a specified timeframe after the inspection the chances are that as long as that part is covered within the service contract, you can have it repaired for free.

If you do not have the budget to pay for a third party inspection, you will have to inspect the car yourself. This may seem overwhelming for some but anybody with a rough idea of vehicles can easily inspect basic components and parts for wear or damage after a little research on the subject. Car forums offer a wealth of information on specific vehicles and vehicles in general, and other car enthusiast sites even have used car buying guides that walk you through the important areas to check and how to check them.

After a visual inspection of the vehicle has been carried out, you should then look into obtaining a vehicle history and hire purchase check on the vehicle to ensure that the car has not been previously written off or does not have an outstanding hire purchase agreement in place that has not been paid off. The last thing to remember is something that so many buyers fail to do before buying an used car, and that is test driving it. A test drive to check the engine, suspension, brakes and electronics is vitally important as some things are not easy to notice when a vehicle is stationary.
