How to get the best overall performance out of Microsoft flight simulator
|
One the problems with MS FSX is that even for an old game, there has been no real service patches released that make use of today's hardware, there is experimental support for direct x 10, but now that we are all running dx 11 to really run ms fsx you are forced to run it in dx 9 mode, a full 2 generations behind.
Is the way to set or your in game settings is feared the Microsoft flight simulator settings page. As you will notice immediately a large portion of the screen real estate is devoted to the graphics and display settings.
One of the ways to quickly get a handle on how ms fsx is performing is to refer to the in game fps, ie frames per second counter. The fps tells you how the frame rate, ie how was fsx is able to draw a completely new screen on your monitor. By pressing shift-z twice on the keyboard this information is displayed on the main screen. Generally, you want the fps to be at least above 20 fps otherwise you will jerkiness slow down.
It may take a little bit of time, but you should experiment to find the best trade-off between performance and visuals. In general ms fsx is cpu limited and not graphics limited. The biggest way to improve your performance in Microsoft flight simulator is actually to limit the amount of scenery autogen, extraneous traffic and of course water visuals. If you need to get more frames per second you should start off by tweaking those.
If you are trying to get more performance than all the settings to do with land class and mass settings should be left at the highest possible as these need to be preserved in order to keep simulation fidelity high. In terms of graphics settings, stick to native resolution but avoid using the direct x 10 preview mode. It is buggy and creates a lot of graphics corruption. For example lines on the tarmac will appear to blink and flash and sometimes textures will disappear completely. Sometimes running direct X mode nine can be faster.

Upon having ms fsx running well the next thing is to set up your flight game controllers. If you are searching for one I actually recommend you begin exploring the logitech g940 flight system review that comes with pedals, joystick and a throttle. A less expensive choice for a similar package will be the saitek x52 pro flight control system
