Backcountry Skiing

Backcountry skiing can be very attractive to the more adventurous. You can avoid the crowds, leave your tracks in fresh powder, feel the immenseness of our natural world. These are excellent attractions, but one must take into account the imminent dangers as well.

In the backcountry there are major hazards like avalanches or where just a little injury can be a major threat to your life. In backcountry skiing you are the sole responsible for assessing the risk and managing any emergency situation that occurs.

If you are considering experiencing backcountry skiing you must be skilled in mountain travel, trained in and be comfortable with wilderness first aid and have avalanche safety gear and know how to use it. There is also special gear for backcountry skiing. Specific skis, boots, bindings, skins, backpacks, etc that are made especially taking into consideration the different needs and circumstances that a backcountry skier faces than a usual downhill resort slope skier would ever even consider. Avalanche gear is also a must, not only for you but if you find others who have been caught in this dangerous situation. Avalanche safety gear includes a beacon or transceiver, avalanche shovel, a probe, and at least one partner who also carries this rescue gear and is trained.

A guide familiar with the terrain is always recommended. Even if you are a long-time, experienced and cautious skier every terrain is different and someone who is familiar with it can make a life's difference. This sport requires a lifetime training process in which the study is serious and constant practice needed. There are written field guides that should be throughly studied and courses that can be taken. Wilderness medical training and practice to become comfortable with those skills is also a must. This aspect can make a difference of life and death out of such a common and usually non life - threatening injury like a twisted ankle. All of these studies, trainings and gear are highly recommended, more over an absolute necessity if you are considering taking up this adventurous sport. Most importantly as a person you must be very serious about caution, about attention to detail, working as a team and be able to handle emergencies that arise in any circumstance.

Backcountry skiing does have many attractions as well as incredible fruits if done in a safe manner. Take into consideration these basic recommendations and look into this sport with more detail. Especially if you live near areas that are ideal for this sport giving you the opportunity to train and find groups that are experienced. Backcountry is incredible as long is safety is put first.
