Wood Floor Installation Cost Variations

Shopping for hardwood floors can be confusing enough, but when you think about wood floor installation cost in addition to all of the choices there are in materials, it can become downright overwhelming. When you visit your local home improvement stores, you will see prices for the various hardwood materials. The material may say that it costs $4 per square foot, but in reality, with installation, it could cost more like $10 per square foot.

Many stores do not list installation prices along with the material prices because they said those costs change too frequently. You will need to be bold and ask the store representatives for details on the wood floor installation cost so you can make an informed decision about your flooring.

There are many things that go into wood floor installation cost. The price per square foot on the actual materials is simply for the flooring itself. It does not reflect the installation or any of the other materials that will be used in the process. Part of the installation fees will depend on what type of floor you are covering in your home. If you are placing the wood floor on a basic wood subfloor, installation will likely be done by fastening floor nailers to the hardwood and then into the floor. That means there will not be too many extra costs in terms of installation materials. The nails are not very expensive. If, on the other hand, you are putting a wood floor over concrete or asphalt, installers will recommend that you first lay down a felt paper to ensure the safety of the flooring. This flooring runs around 4 cents for every square foot and also requires other materials for installation.

Costs will begin to rise even further if you are having a floating floor installed. You will have to pay for underlayments to get the cushioned effect and offset the irregularities that may be felt in the subfloor. There are many different forms of underlayment and they range from 25 cents to $1.50 per square foot.

If you want trim moldings put into place along with the installation of the wood floor, you will also have extra costs. The costs added at this point will depend on the type of molding you choose. Some are rather cheap, but they can add up quickly and add around $200 to the overall job.

The labor for the wood floor installation cost can also vary depending on who is doing the installation. It is a good idea to get a few all-inclusive estimates so you can adequately compare the costs and make an informed decision. No homeowner wants to be surprised with additional costs after the floors have been installed.
