Diseases of the Digestive Tract
|
Most illnesses increase the need for practically everybody requirement. Diseases of the digestive tract, however, so often interfere with digestion and absorption that super-nutrition is called for.
Gastritis
Inflammation of the stomach, or gastritis, is usually a forerunner of ulcers and can be brought on by almost any variety of stress including fungi, alkalis, poisons and corrosives. It is produced experimentally by any deficiency which induces ulcers. Studies of persons with stomach fistulas show that gastritis is not caused by irritation from foods or aggravated by them, but most often results from worry, anxiety, grief, and similar emotions. Nutritionally, an anti-stress diet is needed, and the anti-stress formula should be taken with fortified milk every three hours until recovery is assured. Because abscesses sometimes form on the stomach walls or parts of the mucous membrane may shred off, vitamins A, E, and lecithin are particularly beneficial.
Colitis Enteritis and Ileitis
Inflammation of the large bowel, or colon, is spoken of as colitis. Enteritis may mean an inflammation of only the small intestine or of the entire intestinal tract. An inflammation confined to the last section of the small intestine (the ileum) is referred to as ileitis. In these conditions diarrhea may become severe and ulcers, similar to canker sores, form on the intestinal walls and at times bleed or hemorrhage.
Psychotherapy can usually do more to correct such conditions than various diets or medication. A first group of patients with colitis was given a carefully planned diet, medications, and antibiotics. A second group, consisting of more severe cases, received no diet or medication, but had three months of superficial psychotherapy, during which each individual met frequently with a sympathetic physician who listened to his worries and emotional problems concerning housing, marriage, sex life, children, income, social status, and other matters. The group receiving psychotherapy made greater improvement and had less hemorrhaging and other complications; fewer had to be treated surgically, and fewer died.
During any form of severe stress, the outpouring of adrenal hormones causes such destruction of body protein that at times parts of the walls lining the intestines are literally: eaten away. Such stress quickly depletes the body of pantothenic acid. Enteritis and ulcerative colitis have been produced in pigs kept on pantothenic-acid-deficient diets. The intestinal walls of these animals became highly inflamed, produced excessive amounts of mucus, and showed ulcerated areas which bled or hemorrhaged. Severe diarrhea occurred, and blood albumin passed into the intestinal tract, causing dropsy or retention of water, a condition common in human ulcerative colitis. Such experimental enteritis could be entirely prevented or corrected by pantothenic acid.
Barium given to persons with colitis often passes from glass to toilet in 20 minutes. There is so little time for digestion and absorption to take place that colitis patients have been found to be severely deficient in vitamins A, C, E, all the B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, fat, protein, and practically every nutrient; hence no nutritious food should be forgone because of the diarrhea.
The more severe the diarrhea, the larger should be the amounts of food eaten and the higher its fat content. When colitis patients have been given 1 cup every two hours of fortified milk furnishing 3,600 calories daily and their diet supplemented with vitamins, they improved far more rapidly, felt stronger, and had fewer liquid stools than similar patients given smaller amounts of food.
The nutrients to be emphasized in any inflammation of the intestines should be those suggested for severe stress and for diarrhea. The diet should temporarily contain daily 4 to 6 tablespoons of oil, which holds food in the stomach and is well absorbed; and be high in vitamin B, folic acid, niacin amide, and proteins including eggs or egg yolks and all varieties of cheese. In severe cases, the anti-stress formula might be taken every two hours with a cup of fortified milk to which frozen undiluted fruit juices, bananas, and/or other fruits may be added for extra calories and flavor. Digestive enzymes and lecithin are extremely important, but hydrochloric acid, usually excessive during stress, and bile are not needed.
When the blood pressure is low, indicating adrenal exhaustion and loss of salt from the body, salty foods should be eaten temporarily or 1/2 teaspoon of salt taken one or two times daily in water. If the pressure is above normal, however, potassium-chloride tablets are needed instead.
Because the first sign of a folic-acid deficiency is damage to the intestinal walls, it is well to have fresh or desiccated liver and/or a 5-milligram tablet of folic acid daily. The diet should be supplemented with magnesium and all vitamins. A smooth diet need not be adhered to; any favorite foods may be eaten provided they build health. Because scarring can be severe, a high-protein diet and generous amounts of vitamin E should be continued long after recovery appears to be complete.
The best nutrition possible combined with good psychotherapy undoubtedly yields the speediest recovery. If psychotherapy is not available, try to find a sympathetic ear, perhaps a minister, social worker, or understanding friend. Tears should be allowed to flow freely and some means found to blow off steam harmlessly. When feelings such as worry, anger, and resentment have caused the inflammation, good results cannot be expected until these emotions have been expressed. |
