Discount Vouchers No Longer Have Stigma Attached
|
There have always been a lot of negative connotations when it comes to discount vouchers. For a lot of years, if you cut discount vouchers or coupons out of magazines or newspapers, or ordered coupon books, you might feel a tinge of guilt as you handed over the relevant item at the cashier’s desk. Perhaps you thought it was an inconvenience…it’s more likely you thought that everyone looked down on you and muttered that you were tight under their breaths.
In the last decade or so, however, discount vouchers no longer have the same stigma attached to them, or those who spend them. There is a massive industry built around discount sites that you can search for on the internet, as well as the more traditional coupon books. More often now, the retailers themselves, with supermarkets being the prime example, are sending discount vouchers to their customers, by post or email. With the advent of loyalty cards and club cards in the past century, and especially with the recent recessions, it is becoming not just more socially acceptable, but in fact the social norm, to try and save money.
Since the start of this decade, the UK in particular has seen a rise in the number of discount sites that are often considered cool. Sites that offer student discounts, as well as more generally those that are easier to find online and those who offer discounts that can be used on the internet at e-commerce checkouts are gaining fans among younger generations, which is where the change needs to come. Students have always been perceived as among those who need to save money the most, and more recently they are able to do so without feeling any pressure from their peers.
The advent of mobile marketing is also a great reason for this. Advertisers have always been at pains to reach potential customers through as many mediums as it is possible to do so, and with the majority of the population now possessing mobile phones, with a significant portion of these being smartphones, the mobile market is now becoming commercially viable. For a long time trying to attract customers via their mobile phones was considered spam, or unwanted junk, especially when sent via text message. Since the rise of the internet on mobile phones, it is becoming more socially acceptable to receive discount vouchers via WiFi, Bluetooth and other such mediums, and it feels a little less silly presenting your mobile phone to the cashier than a piece of paper. Nobody is going to think you’re tight if you show them the latest smartphone while you save your money. |
