Benefits of Fiber to The Home (FTTH)

FTTH is an emerging technology, also called Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) or Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB). So-called Fiber to the Home (FTTH) installations are becoming more common as a way to bring ultra high speed Internet service (100 Mbps and higher) to residences. Telecommunication companies are developing FTTH technology plan to support 100+ Mbps bandwidth per home. They view fiber optic cabling as the best technology for high-speed, high-quality residential area networking, eventually replacing both telephone and cable TV lines.

FTTH brings fiber optics directly to homes/buildings, while a similar technology, fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), brings the fiber optics to a community and then connects the fiber optics to the homes with a traditional copper cable. Usually, it is composed of a fiber from the service node to the optical splitter, the optical splitter that separates to terminate on single home ONU. FTTH is mainly suitable for broadband service applications than DSL and other intermediate technologies. Costs to get FTTH services off the ground are high, but fiber optics installations to home are steadily increasing around the world.

FTTH offers a very high bandwidth capacity that helps in the huge amount data transmission through TV, internet, phone. It provides a minimum of 155Mbps bandwidth on both upstream and downstream directions. It is also ready for data demand in future like in the case of 3D high definition TV which is being developed at this moment. Also FTTH has contributed a lot in the field of online games that has taken place during the last years. FTTH is able to provide gigabits per second by the use of a very steadfast network.

In the earlier days the expense of setting up FTTH was high. This made people to look out for alternatives. The high cost of FTTH was because every house or condo has to be connected separately. However, now the costs have come down a lot with the development of brilliant engineering techniques such as preconnectorized cables. FTTH provides a strong outside plant that requires only very little maintenance over the lifetime of the system. Compared to traditional copper networks, fiber networks need only less maintenance. The Fiber Optic Network or FTTH in particular is a best choice for services for home or business that requires high amount of data transmission.
