How to Make Container Gardening Work for You

Container gardening appears to be the wave of the future, as it is a way for anyone to grow the plants, flowers or vegetables that they want in any type of living situation. You can select any size you desire for the container and there are a variety of possibilities of plants you can grow. Following are some imperative aspects that should help you to produce a strong and healthy container garden.

The first thing to think about is what sorts of containers are available for container gardening and which ones would suit you best. Of the many, many containers available for your container garden; you could use buckets, old shoes, and tin cans, just to name a few. If you opt for wood containers, make sure that the wood is chemical free and bear in mind that it is a material that will eventually rot. If water sits in the container, it will have ill effects on the plants; therefore you will need to allow adequate drainage. Knowing that light colors have less of a tendency to retain undesirable heat that could be too hard on your plants; you may want to stay away from using dark colored containers. The sizes of your containers will hinge on the size of the plants you will be putting in them. You need to provide enough room for your plants, whatever you decide on growing; with sufficient area to flourish in.

For sure, a container garden is not as arduous a task as your traditional outside garden, but it does have separate issues that you will need to attend to like controlling temperature and humidity requirements. You would be best rewarded by opting for plants that are indigenous or adaptable to your area. If you decide to grow plants that are accustomed to a dry climate, like cacti; you may have issues trying to provide an overly humid atmosphere or excessive low temperatures. Then if you opt for those opposite types of plants of a tropical nature; you will have a different set of standards to live up to, making sure the plants are sufficiently hydrated. You can mingle plants with the same requirements in the same containers.

There are different approaches you can take to container gardening. One method is to simply have a separate pot or container for each plant. This is the simplest approach, and this way you avoid the issue of compatibility. However, it can be nice to have large containers that have several types of plants, vegetables or flowers. Compatibility, if you do use larger containers to accommodate more plants, then becomes an issue to deal with. Planting a cactus next to a flower that requires water in excess is not a good idea. Plants that grow outwardly, spreading rapidly, should always be planted separately or away from plants that do not. If container gardening is something you have never attempted, there is really no justification for not having made the previous attempts. If you have knowledge of traditional gardening you will more than likely learn that container gardening is way easier. Taking advantage of a container garden after simply planting some seeds in a couple of pots or planters is something that even people who have never done so before can take advantage of.
