Stay in the beautiful Ferrara hotels for your Italian break

Ferrara is a beautiful city in Italy north of Bologna and a popular tourist spot for international travellers who come looking for culture, arts, history and stunning scenery. So it is no wonder thousands of tourists book into Ferrara hotels every year.

No one is sure when people first settled in Ferrara but it does have a rich history and is noted for being ruled by the Este family from 1208 to 1598, their influence is evident throughout the city with many monuments and artefacts that are still around today. It was because of the Estes family that Ferrara became so well known for the arts as they commissioned great artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, and Petrarch, among others. However, due to the Estes not managing to produce a male heir Ferrara was claimed by the Pope which caused the city to decline for many decades before being re awakened in the 19th Century. The decline took its toll on the city but many of the great art were saved and has been restored ready for you to come and enjoy.

Ferrara is surrounded by 9 kilometres of city walls which the more athletic visitors walk or cycle around to view the stunning city and its surroundings. There is plenty for the more active visitors as Ferrara has plenty of walks and tours for you to go round. Or you could of course just relax and enjoy the wonderful Italian cuisine and culture.

Ferrara also has plenty of churches to visit with a strong religious history the churches and cathedral have been well looked after and preserved and even the least religious of visitors will be humbled by their stunning architecture and art. You can also visit the Palaces of the Este family and of Ludovico il Moro which are both stunning buildings packed full of interesting history your guide can tell you all about. There are also many places of interest such as the house of the famous poet Ludovico Ariosto and the Jewish community.

Like many Italian cities Ferrara has many parks and gardens that are beautifully kept by Italian gardeners, you can walk around these parks and gardens and have a picnic. Many Ferrara hotels will be able o point out the most interesting and attractive places to visit many of which are free to look around.
