Branson and beanbags

Richard Branson is renowned for not giving anything 10 out of 10 according to an article written by him in Canadian Business magazine recently. According to Branson there is always room for improvement and for him a 9 is about as high as he goes.
He recognised bad service at an early age. As a boy he remembers being continually chased out of record stores when all he wanted to do was spend his pocket money. So when he opened his initial Virgin Records store in London, he made sure to create an environment where children and young people particularly could feel comfortable. Cranked up sound systems and beanbags scattered around therefore, all added to the shopping experience.
His philosophy has always been: ‘to look at your business or brand from the outside in. Instead of looking strictly through the prism of the latest quarterly financials, attempt to see yourself as your customers see you.’ One of the ways he does this is by calling his own customer help line to see how easy the system is.
Branson actually made the shopping experience enjoyable in his records stores where people could go in, relax and listen to music before buying anything which would seem to be a good ploy when selling records. Other shops could certainly follow Branson’s example and provide cheap and comfortable seating for shoppers who spend a lot of money and a lot of time on their feet. Many a well meaning boyfriend would be thankful for a large leather beanbag chair to lounge in as his girlfriend scours through every item of clothing in the shop.
