The Most Popular Van Gogh Oil Paintings

Van Gogh oil paintings make up most of his artworks over his life. He was a known painter of the oil medium and was good at it considering the fact that he only had so much time to work with it in his short life. He began painting when he was more than 20 years old, though he had loved art since he was a young boy.

The Potato Eaters

The Potato Eaters was van Gogh's first major oil painting. Made in 1885, it somehow lacked the distinctive characteristics of van Gogh's later paintings. It was made with earthy tones of blacks, browns and very deep reds and greens unlike his later paintings that made use of bright colors. It was a depiction of how peasants really lived. They could eat their potatoes with their bare hands, the same hands which they have used to work with in the light of the day. With a single oil lamp, these peasants live very close to each other, offering each other their own share of food and pouring each other's teas. This wasn't from his mind though, as he had painted The Potato Eaters with models.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers were one of the most popular subjects of Vincent van Gogh oil paintings. He has released two series of oil paintings of sunflowers in 1888 to 1889. He has painted sunflowers more than any other subject in his lifetime. The first ones were painted as two sunflowers lie on the ground, while the later ones were painted as fifteen sunflowers in a vase. All in all these were simple paintings with simple subjects and simple styles, but it has clearly defined van Gogh and his works. Since the start of the 20th century, no art exhibition of van Gogh had ever excluded his sunflowers, also known as The Flowers. In 1987, Yasuo Goto paid a total amount of a little lower than $40 million for the Sunflower series of paintings, making it the most expensive painting paid for at the time.

The Starry Night

Undeniably, the Starry Night is Vincent van Gogh's most famous painting. It was painted in 1889, with oil in a canvas measuring 29 inches by 36.25 inches. It is also one of the most widely reproduced painting in the world. It was, and still is, considered as his magnum opus. The vivid blues of the skies and the yellows of the stars and moon have captured the interest of many. But, the then growing artist wasn't really impressed with his own work. He believed that it lacked what his other paintings had. It seemed to him that the Starry Night didn't have the effect that he wanted it to have. He said there weren't emotions in the painting. However, he did come to realize that not all things are meant to be, just as his colors and the trees and the city and the mountain in this were, in this most popular of van Gogh oil paintings.
