A Disaster Preparedness Kit Can Save Your Life

Getting ready for any calamity such as a hurricane, an earthquake or a tsunami is becoming a priority these days. We have seen towns and communities wiped out by natural catastrophes and it only makes sense to take the time to be prepared for the worst. One of the measures you can take to manage the potential damages of calamities is to have a disaster preparedness kit.

Calamities can easily put your life and your family's at risk. It makes sense, then, to do what you can to ensure your family's survival after such disasters. Investing on a good disaster preparedness kit is a smart move, although it may mean spending money on some essentials. A good survival kit should be enough to sustain your basic needs for at least 72 hours, until the situation gets better.

After a natural calamity, supplies will be scarce and you may not even be capable to look for the basic things you need. Water becomes very precious, which is why most disaster readiness pack contains water bottles and water purification tablets. There are also packed dry food like cereals and granola bars that are included to sustain users for at least 72 hours.

Usually, there is a power outage that follows a natural catastrophe. Thus, you need to make sure that you have LED flashlights, candles, waterproof matches, extra batteries and an AM/FM radio that can help you get through days with no electricity. Most survival packs also contain solar blankets that can keep you warm, as well as a whistle which you can use to inform people where you are.

Babies and small children should have their own needs taken care of. Make sure your kit contains warm gloves, medicines, drinking water, milk powder and other essentials. Include a first-aid bag that has pain relievers, gauze pads, adhesive bandages, cotton, anti-diarrhea tablets, an instant cold pack and a dust mask.

Your emergency kits should always be kept somewhere accessible in your home, office or inside your car. The contents of your survival pack should always be updated. Check for expired items at least every six months and throw them out.

Statistics show that only about 30% of American families are adequately prepared to handle an emergency. Being able to react fast during emergency situations can actually save you or a family member during extreme situations. Take inventory of what you may need during emergencies and decide to either make your own disaster preparedness kit or purchase an assembled one from reliable suppliers.
