Different Properties Of Solder Wire


Solder wire come in different forms such as lead or lead free, acid cored solder wire, no clean flux solder wire, flux cored solder wire for soldering aluminium and aluminium alloys and other metals such as stainless steel. You can use solder wire for hard soldering, silver soldering or brazing which is where solder wire is melted to join together metal alloys. The most common type of solder is solder wire as they are the most versatile and used widely in many applications. Whereas plumbers may opt for bars of solder and jewellers will use snippets of thin sheets solder instead of solder wire. Choosing the right solder wire for your purpose requires some pre-knowledge of the required metal mix. For example a plumber may require solder wire that has a higher proportion of lead as it has the advantage of solidifying the alloy slowly so that it could be moulded over the joint so the pipes fit together to ensure water tightness. Since the late 1980s lead free solder wire such as silver or copper solder wire is preferred for water applications as small amounts of lead could have detrimental health effects. As different mixes of alloys in the solder wire will show various solidifying behaviour it is important to choose the right mix for the purpose in mind. The solder wire is heated until it gets to the desired liquid state at which point the solder wire has a degree of plasticity that allows the solder wire user to create the joint, filling larger gaps or moulded over the joints. Each element in solder wire plays different roles: copper lowers the melting point and improves resistance to thermal cycle fatigue and improves wetting properties of the molten solder wire. Lead is cheap and has suitable soldering properties as it restricts the growth of tin whiskers. Silver solder wire provides strength but is not as ductile as lead. Tin is the main structure of solder wire as it has good strength and wetting properties but tin solder wire requires other metals otherwise it is prone to tin pest and growth of tin whiskers. Solder wire is available in many different dimensions, weight sizes and different melting points.
