Darmstadt is a lovely city near the south of the Rhine in Germany and enjoys being one of the sunniest cities in Germany. This is one reason many people love to visit this stunning Art Deco city and stay at Darmstadt hotels in the area.
Darmstadt used o be home to the dukes and duchesses, and even boasts being the birthplace of the last Empress of Russia, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Romanov. Walking through the streets of Darmstadt from your Darmstadt hotel will take you back to a time where the Dukes and Duchesses tried to capture scenery from around the world, like Orangery's and Baroque gardens. Darmstadt's gardeners still keep the gardens and parks in lovely condition with plants growing all year round.
Some of the 18th Century buildings are now used as Hotels, shops and even the larger buildings are used for concerts, and you can enjoy restaurants and fine cuisines in such lovely buildings.
Unlike most towns and cities in Germany Darmstadt is not situated on the banks of a river and although the city has been used as a settlement since the eleventh century, but due to the sandy ground great buildings were not structurally sound. It wasn't until the Dukes and Duchesses arrived in the 16th Century when they cultivated the land with fertilizers to provide a good foundation for their buildings and stunning architecture.
Although the aristocracy are long gone they have left behind an affluent city with cosmopolitan bars and restaurants for you to sample fine cuisines and a menu of cocktails. Most Darmstadt hotels will be able to point you to a bar or nightclub that suits you, or if you want a quieter meal out and relaxed evening there are restaurants to suit.
Darmstadt was central to the World War 2 conflict with many Nazi's situated in the city and many of the stunning buildings have been destroyed by British bombs, however not all and many of the Darmstadt hotels and buildings are in the stunning Art Deco style that was fashionable at the time. This makes the city really stand out from other German towns and cities and is a truly unique place to visit. |
