Sleep Apnea Masks - Making The Right Choice

Some people can experience cessation of breath while sleeping. This condition is known in the medical field as sleep apnea. It is a serious sleeping disorder that requires a potent solution to avoid complications. Fortunately today there are devices that offer help in solving this issue. Among the list of such devices are sleep apnea masks. If you are in the market for it, here are a few considerations you have to make. First, you should be aware that there are different types of masks that are commercially available. This means that you when you buy, you have to make a choice. While you can go and pick from any one of them, understanding which type is most suitable to you can make a big difference.

The most popular type is the nasal mask, that is fitted over the nose. Sufferers of sleep apnea who normally breathe through the mouth may benefit more from oral masks. Another type, which is the nasal pillow mask offers more flexibility than nasal or oral masks since there is no mask that can be forced out while you sleep, as it involves the use of nasal inserts only. Still another type is the full face mask which not only covers the nose but the mouth as well, and aren't ideal for those who are claustrophobic. When you have chosen the type that fits you, you should next pay attention to the size. The use of the mask is part of sleep apnea treatment, which when not employed properly may not achieve the desired results. An effective way to ensure the mask performs as intended is to choose the right size. This prevents the associated discomfort and air leakage. The sizes available in the market are small and medium. A rule of thumb is to opt for the smaller size if you can't find the size that perfectly fits you.

Apart from this, the material of the mask should be looked into. It typically comes in hard plastic and soft silicone seal. If you have allergy to silicone, then go for one that is of synthetic rubber or vinyl construction. Similar to deciding on what anti snoring devices to use, you need to look into the available features of the mask to aid you in making the right selection. There are masks with an adjustable pad on the forehead area; some would have a silicon seal that inflates when the machine starts to operate to give more comfort and a snug fit; and there are also one-size fits all masks that have a soft shell and gel cushion with flexible wiring so the mask is molded following the contours of your face.
