Reduce Surface Runoff during winter with Grass mats
|
With the winter months approaching the chance of rain is increasing. With unsettled weather due to global warming and human’s influence into the atmosphere – the chance of flash flooding and surface water in an urban environment is increasing. Add to this the increasing number of cars, business and schools have to find new parking areas to accommodate their staff. Traditional surfacing techniques of paving in concrete or asphalt often cover up remaining grass and green areas, reducing the local ground’s ability to soak up rain water and increasing surface water and runoff.
During those winter months vegetation growth is limited due to the colder temperatures, because of this covering the grass area with these mats will do no harm to the soil underneath. Keeping the mats on top of the soil during the colder months could possibly help with growth and vegetation in the upcoming summer months. As the grass mats will cover the existing grass the soil underneath will be protected from the cold weather, although the grass needs sunlight to grown the soil does not. Nutrients in the soil will be preserved during the winter months ready for fresh green grass to grow back in spring. All of this can only be achieved when surface run off is reduced; when the surface is flooded the soil is full and cannot breath.
With a lack of natural porous ground businesses and schools can finds themselves battling with localised flooding and possible costs in the future dealing with new drainage issues. Grass mats offer an ideal solution to provide new parking surfaces on grass areas without compromising the local water table and affecting localised flood risks.
The cost of grass mat installation is far more cost effective than traditional surfacing and the environmental benefits worth the investment. If and when an area is not required – removal of grass mats is far easier and uprooting layered concrete or hardened asphalt. Once removed, the area can then grow back to its original state, providing drainage and greenery for the surrounding areas.
The grass mat can easily be pulled up moved into storage or rented out to other businesses during the time it’s not needed. Then when the winter months start to set in the mats can then be laid back down for addiction parking whilst providing the existing drainage to the surrounding areas. Grass mats will work all year round, will not rot and have a shelf life of 10+ years. This is a very cost effective way of reducing surface runoff of high-risk flooding areas. |
