First Novel Preliminaries
|
Writing a novel is just not something people do because they just only desire to. They have to actually adore the idea of doing it so they can stick to it towards the end. If you've been planning to write one yourself and never got around to even starting, it's possible that you lack that spark within you or that passion that drives most untiring novelists who write after page as though it were as simple as brushing their teeth. In short, that need to write your story really needs to be burning deep inside you. In any other case, it should be going to remain there, buried and untold for life. No matter if it is a story of love, revenge, nationalism or what have you, that story needs to be told, if you even conceived it in your mind. So try harder next time around while reading the following to help you put a structure to your novel-writing plans.
What you want to do first is to ask yourself what the story is. Go on and write it down like you would write it for your own reading. Don't worry yourself about the style or the pacing yet. What you'd like to do is to just write the backbone of your novel, including, of course, all the main characters. By main characters, we mean those who play crucial roles in the development of your story. Do not wory about the subplots yet. Only get your main plot written down an dthink about yuour sub-plots after you have decided on the main twists and turns of your main storyline.
Once you've finished establishing your plot, work on your characterization. Jot down every one of the main characters you have and beside their names, record a detailed description of who they are and what they play in your story. This is significant because, though you would feel like you're doing a language class exercise, you will be doing your novel good by strenghtening you rcharacters and your story. Keep in mind that whatever you're telling, it all boils down to how you develop your characters. The way you tell the events is relevant as well, but when your characterization is weak, you will not be able to achieve every novelist's goal and that is to capture the heart, mind and soul of a reader. When you create characters that are so strong they come alive in your readers' thoughts, that's when you know you've done a good job.
With your main plot coming in concrete form and your characters being strongly defined, now you are ready to develop your story. Veteran novelists normally do not do any of these things when they write. They're so competent at it they are able to do a fabulous job each time without any of these preliminaries. But because you are a newbie and may probably use some preparation and a push, then you can try these techniques. You'll be ready breaking down your main story into chapters. Then you can definitely fill in each chapter with details until you end up developing each chapter naturally as you write.
Writing a novel certainly will not be easy, but once you believe in your story and you start seeing it coming to life, you'll find yourself focusing on it and never wanting to stop until you just have to. |
