A large contingent of Canada’s top skaters will be heading to Mississauga, Ontario to compete against the world’s best at the 2011 Skate Canada International. The event is the second of six competitions in the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating and will run from October 28-30, 2011 at the Hershey Centre.
With 11 countries in the running for medals, a strong competitive field will be showcasing a variety of Olympic and World Championship veterans, with some exciting newcomers who will be contending for the podium in two years’ time at the next Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

In the men’s competition 2011 World Champion and four-time defending Canadian Champion Patrick Chan will defend the title that he won last year in Kingston. Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi won the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships last year and finished fifth at the ISU World Championships. He comes into the event with the highest ISU world ranking. Adam Rippon of the USA placed third at Skate Canada International last year and is looking to reach the podium again this year.

Canada’s two other entries in men’s include Andrei Rogozine, World Junior Champion in 2011 and bronze medalist at the 2010 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final, as well as national team member Elladj Baldé, who placed fifth at the 2011 Canadian Figure Skating Championships.
Cynthia Phaneuf, Canada’s reigning national champion, placed fourth at Skate Canada International last year and will be challenging for a podium position at this year’s competition. Akiko Suzuki of Japan holds the highest ISU world ranking in this division and placed fifth at Skate Canada International in 2009. Alena Leonova of Russia and Mirai Nagasu of the USA are both veteran competitors ranked in the top ten of the ISU world standings. World junior silver medalist Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia will be competing at her first ISU Senior Grand Prix event and will be hoping to make a big first impression.

Canada’s two other entries in ladies are national team members Amélie Lacoste, who won bronze at Skate Canada International in 2010 and Adriana DeSanctis, who placed fifth at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 2011. Both have been training well and will be looking to impress in front of the Canadian crowd.
In pair skating, 2011 Canadian silver medalists Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, who placed fifth at Skate Canada International last year are the top ranked Canadian pair team at the event. Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers will be aiming to make it onto the podium again after last year’s bronze medal performance at Skate Canada International.
Russians Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov are the 2011 world pair silver medalists and the top ranked pair team in Mississauga. The Chinese pair team of Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, Japanese team of Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran, and last year’s Skate Canada International champions Lubov Iliushechkina and Nodari Maisuradze round out the field.

Jessica Dubé, the 2008 world bronze medalist and 2010 Skate Canada International bronze medalist with former partner Bryce Davison, will be competing at this year’s competition with new partner Sébastien Wolfe.
Canada’s Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir finished second at the 2011 World Championships, and are the highest-ranked ice dancers at the event. France’s team of Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat won gold in both of their ISU Grand Prix assignments last season while Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy, won silver at both of their ISU Grand Prix assignments last season. Both teams are ranked in the top ten on the ISU world standings.
Canadians Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, fifth at last year’s ISU World Figure Skating Championships, will be looking to make the podium in Mississauga. The pair of Tarrah Harvey and Keith Gagnon, who were eighth earlier this year at an international competition in Germany, will be making their ISU Senior Grand Prix debut in Mississauga. |
