A beginners guide to Zumba
|
The word Zumba in Colombia is slang for making a noise like a bee or simply moving very quickly. It is the name for a highly popular new dance fitness routine that uses elements of Latin dance forms, belly dancing and hip-hop to encourage the body to sweat and to tone the body while developing the abs. The Zumba fitness program is acknowledged by the leading fitness trainers across the world, which includes the Aerobic Fitness Association of America, the IDEA Health and Fitness Association, and the American Council on Exercise. Rather than working the body up to a peak and then slowly down at the end of the session, Zu is mba uses elements of interval training, taking the heartbeat up and down throughout the exercise session so that the body is continuously burning calories and fat. Depending on age and fitness levels as well as the intensity of the exercise, most people burn between 500 and 700 calories.
Most fitness programs include elements of weight loss as well as improving body strength. Says Dr David Kruse of UC Irvine "So if a person can find a way of exercising that is efficient, creates the aerobic demand needed for burning calories, develops strength and stability, and at the same time is enjoyable, this is ideal." The dynamics of the dance and the endurance required for Zumba meet these requirements. The story goes that Beto Perez of Colombia, the inventor of Zumba in 1990 and an aerobics instructor, forgot his music at home one day and used the music from his car. The music was Latin, a mix of Colombian dance music and salsa, and he simply improvised the routines. He then moved to Florida where it became the new craze. Today licensed instructors offer Zumba lessons to millions of fitness enthusiasts in over 110,000 locations in more than 125 countries.
Zumba uses as its slogan "Ditch the workout. Join the party". Fun in any form of exercise is highly beneficial. Once again, here is what Dr David Kruse has to say "For many, the challenge of exercise is the day-to-day motivation to stay consistent and dedicated to their fitness program. A key aspect of a successful program is finding an activity that is not only realistic but also enjoyable, if a workout is fun, then it is not as hard to get to the gym after a long day at work." |
