At a distance of some 13 kilometers from the Trivandrum, this is a place which offers a lot to tourists, the city boasts of the having three beaches, all in the shape of a crescent. They are separated by the rocky outcroppings, which beautifies the look of the beaches. The tourists can swim on these beaches, availability of hundreds of meters of shallow water.
One of the beaches, which is also the largest, is called Light House Beach, deriving its name from the light house which is 35 meters high. This towers it a top the hillock Kurumakal. The second largest is Hawah Beach, which is named so because of the presence of European women tourists, who are top nude. Also the first beach to have topless women hanging around.

The northern part of the beach is also known as Samudra Beach among tourists. A large headland separates this part from the southern side. The former does not have many tourists visiting or too much of business. They are mostly used by fishermen to carry on with their trade. The color of the sands on the beaches is partially black. There are a large number of beach resorts in and around Kovalam. A sea port famous for its special varieties of fishes available is Vizhinjam. Not just this but also the old Hindu temples, grand churches and also a mosque.

Kovalam is gaining new importance in the light of several Ayurvedic salons, and recuperation and regeneration resorts. They can visit Varkala into the north on the highway; this has a cool beach and also the cliff front other than the usual tourist amenities.

The quiet sandy beaches and large lakes of Paravur which is roughly65 km from Kovalam are also close to Varkala and are hidden away. Paravur is not a very popular place; it’s more of a shared secret among those who have been to it. They keep this place a secret, since it’s a more. The normal tourist season is from September to May. Ashoka beach is also the part of Kovalam beach. It is easy to reach the place with the help of so many tourist operators working in this field.
