Structured BMX learning for the younger rider

Some parents worry that the informal and overtly individualistic nature of BMX may make it more difficult for a younger child to learn and develop BMX riding skills in a safe, consistent and structured way. There are however two definite paths by which BMX riding can be undertaken by young, novice riders in a more supervised way.

Firstly, there are now several official local authority BMX parks in each region right across the country. Provided the correct protective clothing (including helmet and elbow and knee pads) is worn when practising, and provided the parent remains close by to help and advise, these areas can be of real benefit in helping young riders to build regular, carefully planned practice sessions into their riding routine. Some local authorities even pay experienced BMX riders to provide group training sessions.

Secondly, an alternative form of BMX riding, racing BMX, is a more highly organised form of BMX riding, yet one which, based on riding a bike at speed over a dirt track, remains a thrilling and exhilarating entry route for both younger and older riders into the world of BMX.

Joining a racing BMX club means following official rules and guidelines, not only on wearing the correct, protective gear and riding a suitable BMX bike, but also on what to do when participating in races. The payback is the chance for the rider to win an official trophy within a number of categories, namely: age group; level of experience; and size of BMX bike. It also provides the opportunity for riders to meet up socially, as well as sometimes giving a rider access to practice sessions on the club’s grounds.

At bmx.co.uk we can help younger riders to decide on which type of BMX riding they prefer, as well as offering a range of great quality but cheap BMX bikes.
