How to Get the Best Out of Your Tomato Seeds
|
There is nothing like the taste of home grown tomatoes. You may be surprised to hear that seasonal British tomatoes are highly prized around the world. This is because the cooler summer temperatures can create slower growing, sweetly flavoured fruits. You can easily grow your plants from tomato seeds and see for yourself just how delicious home grown tomatoes can be.
Getting Started
Even if you do not have a greenhouse or a big garden you can still grow tomato seeds at home. Tomato seeds will thrive in any warm sunny position so if you have a south facing window sill you can still start them successfully indoors. All you will need is some pots, good quality compost and a bright position to get started.
* You should sow your tomato seeds between January and April. This will give the plants a chance to mature so that they are ready to harvest from July through to August. All you need to do to give your tomato seeds the best chance to grow is:
* Prepare your pots by filling with good seed compost and then watering thoroughly. Leave the pots to drain until they are damp to the touch (not waterlogged).
* Use tap water to start your tomato seeds off. Avoid using rainwater collected in a water butt as this can contain harmful microorganisms that can damage fragile young plants.
* Don't over-sow your pots. Make sure there is at least an inch between each seed so that they have a chance to germinate comfortably.
* After you have sown the tomato seeds evenly sprinkle over a fine layer of dry compost to cover.
* If you are placing your tomato seeds on the window sill then cover the pots with a layer of cling film. This helps to create a warm, damp environment ideal for germination.
* Try to pick a window sill in a room that stays constant in temperature. Ideally the room should stay at around 21°-25°C. Sunny window sills in conservatories can be great during the day but if they do not have any heating you should bring the plants into the main house overnight.
* Once the young tomato plants are around 3 to 4 inches high you can separate them and plant them in individual plots or into growbags. Be very careful when separating the root ball to avoid damage.
