Skating as a means of commuting

A growing trend is to use skating not just for fitness and recreation but also as a practical means of getting quickly to and from school or work. Employing skates as a mode of transport can be both fun and economical, provided the following points are heeded.

Firstly, it is necessary to select the most appropriate skates for this daily ride. The skates that are usually recommended for such trips are recreational inline skates, as these allow the user to quickly gain pace whilst providing maximum comfort. Inline skates also offer the added security of a heel brake for stopping quickly and easily.

Secondly, the wearing of full safety gear is imperative, including a suitably fitting helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, and reflective clothing for duller mornings and evenings. Thirdly, it is vital that training is undertaken with a qualified instructor. Training is usually available for both adults and children of all abilities, provided they can stand and move unsupported on their skates and also have learnt how to stop.

Even those with some knowledge and experience of skating will often find they still need to learn how to negotiate the particular traffic and pedestrian hazards of peak-time street skating. Training can also provide insights into how to minimise injuries by, for example, teaching riders to always try and fall forwards should they lose control, so as to benefit fully from their protective clothing.

Finally, it is important to pre-plan the route to avoid any bumps and potholes as these can be potentially hazardous. It is also very useful to try and learn about the specific local bye-laws on skating and whether skating in the local area is, for example, more accepted on the pavement than the road.

To get you started, at skates.co.uk we have the widest range of quality inline skates available at terrific value for money prices.
