Fantastic Opportunity to Attract Wild Birds is in the Fall

As the leaves begin to fall, wild birds are moving about in search of wild birds food. Many of the wild birds are insect and fruit eaters. What an opportunity this is to see birds you have not seen before. Get your bird seed out. Since these foods are not available in the cold winter months the birds fly south. The migration period stretches from September-November, with the flight of migrants reaching its height in mid-September and on into mid- October. For bird watchers, or birders as they are now known, who live in the south or on the migration path, this peak period is the advantageous time to look out for the feathered visitors. Then, toward the end of October and into November, seed loving birds move down south to take up residence for the winter.

In the Fall, the wild birds in the north are preparing for their journeys by eating high calorie birds food. Of the various wild birds food, seeds, nuts and suet have the highest calorific content and high energy value to appease a bird's hunger. At this time you northern bird watchers can help them most by getting ready your backyard with bird feeders containing these type of birds food. Mealworm feeding dishes for bluebirds can be used in the Fall to attract all kinds of insect loving birds. It will be well worth the effort for the pleasure you get from viewing dozens of wild birds.

New birds that you will attract include warblers, flycatchers, kinglets, thrushes, waxwings and tanagers. Set out your feeders and water to tempt them to a section of your yard where you can see the birds.

Fill your feeders with birds food such as sunflower, safflower and thistle seed. Include also some suet blocks and dried fruits (raisins, cherries, and apples). The more varied your gifts, the more variety of wild birds you will attract. You can even get hold of some bug mixes from birding stores.

Styles of feeder that are excellent for wild birds in the Fall are the tray and platform type. Place them where the rapacious hawks cannot effortlessly swoop down looking for an easy meal of wild birds. A well-designed tray feeder has a screened bottom to drain away excess water. Birds food will spoil if it is always damp. Recycled plastic trays are a good choice as they are made to last. If you favor wood, get those made of cedar, which is also long lasting and contains a natural insecticide!

Another type of feeder is the Ground Feeding Tray which sits on the ground. Wild birds such as doves and sparrows prefer to feed on the ground. Try a Ground Platform Feeder manufactured of long lasting recycled plastic or trays constructed from cedar. The food is easy to eat from these type of feeders.

Hanging Trays may be your feeder of choice. These handy trays may be hung in a tree or on a pole in an easy to see location. Covered Trays are good for keeping rain and snow off the wild birds food. .

Do not forget to leave clean water for the wild birds. It's important to provide water for them if you want them to remain in your backyard as long as possible. Water is essential for the survival of wild birds. Migrating birds may only visit your yard for a day or so when they travel south. You will not want them to abandon your backyard too quickly because they need to search for water. Water dripping from a garden hose into a bird bath is a ploy to attract the wild birds. Moving water keeps the water free of algae and the sound appeals to the wild birds. When water is freezing, you can use an electric bird bath heater.

Remember to provide wild birds food for the birds.
