Recommendations on making a rock garden

Many people like to create a wonderful feature within their garden simply by constructing a rock garden. It is great since it will fit into just about any garden. Different types and Colours of rocks (limestone along with sandstone being the most effective) can be used to match the surrounding area, as well as harmonising this way is going to be pleasing to the eye. Make sure you find various sizes of stone including a few big types, but not too many for a compact garden. Stay away from using concrete or bricks as these materials are unsuitable for alpines as well as other rockery plants, all they are going to do is provide a pleasant home for slugs and snails.

Where you place your rockery is important, it should be open and clear of trees. Some alpines require shade, however this is often accomplished by very carefully positioned rocks. The most important factor of a rockery is well drained earth. The soil needs to be dug to about a couple of ft and a covering of 75mm limestone located at the bottom. If you have dug up some lawn to build your rockery, this is put upside down on top of the limestone all of which will aid the drainage process. Make sure the earth is rammed in behind and around each rock put in place. Whenever deciding which way to place rocks, I normally just throw them in the air and let gravity to decide for me. Dwarf conifers can be used in your design to offer an illusion of height; they can provide shade to other flowers.

Ahead of making your own rockery it is often sensible to check out several well-designed rockeries to obtain a good idea of what you want to accomplish.

One of the keys to a great rockery is to try and make it appear as natural as possible, good drainage and a variety of well selected plants.
