How Many Women Suffer Hair Loss After Pregnancy?

Hair loss after pregnancy is very common indeed. It varies a little from country to country, but runs at an average of 50%. For most women this condition is only temporary and their hair growth returns to normal within 4 to 8 months. However, for some women recovery takes a little longer. A few women who have their children close together end up with hair that is so thin that it appears as if they are going bald.

How soon the hair loss occurs after pregnancy depends on each woman’s normal hair growth cycle. Some women’s hair loss occurs 1 month after delivery, whilst for others it occurs up to 5 months after the delivery of their baby. The re-growth cycle also varies.

What Causes Hair Loss After Pregnancy?
The rise in hormones in a woman’s body whilst she is pregnant means that she loses very little, if any, hair during the actual pregnancy. That is why many women’s hair looks so thick and healthy while they are pregnant. Once the baby is born a woman’s hormone balance returns to normal and the body sheds hair as normal. Except that in around 50% of women all of the hair they would have normally shed, but did not during pregnancy, is shed all at once. This sudden loss of lots of old hair is what gives the appearance of serious thinning of the hair.

What Can You Do About Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Unfortunately, there is not a great deal you can do about hair loss after pregnancy. If you are prone to it you cannot avoid it completely, however you can do a few things to slightly improve the problem. The first is to feed your hair using your diet before you get pregnant, during your pregnancy and immediately afterwards. This should speed up the rate at which your hair re-grows.
You can also disguise hair loss after pregnancy by changing your hair style or using hair thickening products. Wearing your hair short or wearing it up is a very effective way of disguising hair loss.
