The Connection Between Health and Safety and Industrial Flooring

An alarming number of all accidents at work and in the home are caused by slips and falls caused by poorly designed or laid flooring. It is estimated that this kind of accident costs industries over £500 million per year. For this reason it is vital that you take the time to choose your industrial flooring carefully.

Buying the cheapest floor you can find may save you money in the short term, but if that flooring wears quickly and the surface becomes uneven or slippery you will have to have it re-laid to prevent accidents and comply with health and safety regulations. This means that buying cheap industrial flooring is a false economy. Plus, you could end up putting your employees in unnecessary danger simply because you brought the wrong flooring.

Health and Safety Considerations When Buying Industrial Flooring

Factoring in health and safety when you buy industrial flooring can considerably reduce your risk of experiencing accidents at a later date.

The first thing to ensure is that the flooring you are buying is designed to stand up to the processes that will take place in the workspace it will be laid in. That way the floor should not break up creating dips or indentations that could lead to trips or falls, or machinery like reach trucks not being able to stop properly. Of course, you can repair floors, but this costs money, disrupts your business and creates small variations in the repaired floor's surface which can end up creating even worse trip or fall hazards.

The second thing to consider is how non-slip your industrial flooring should be. It is important to find out how non-slip it is when it gets wet. Of course part of good health and safety is that all spills should be quickly marked and cleaned up, but this is not always easy. How quickly you can clean up a spill and dry the area is also dependant on the type of material your industrial flooring is made of, so that needs to be factored in too.
