Diamond Grinding
|
The process of diamond grinding is used a lot within the manufacturing industry, but few people realise that is also used on flooring. Diamond grinding is used to restore the finish of old flooring or, occasionally, to give new flooring surfaces a smoother finish.
It is also used when a new floor has to be laid over the top of an old floor. It takes the existing surface back to a level which is in good repair and creates a keyed surface to which the new flooring can adhere.
Diamond grinding can also be used to remove carpet glue or adhesive residue which is left behind when tiles have been lifted. It is also good at removing old paint or old layers of polish or other finishes.
The Diamond Grinding Process
The diamond grinding process varies from job to job, but most of the time it starts with a thin layer of durable abrasive aggregate being spread across the area that is to be ground. Next a grinding machine is passed over that area. This is done in a controlled fashion and is usually quite a slow process. A skilled grinder can produce a smooth surface after just one pass, but even they may have to go over certain areas more than once. This is particularly the case when there are lumps and bumps in a floor. Occasionally, stubborn lumps and bumps have to be shot blasted then ground yet again.
Things to Bear In Mind When Considering Diamond Grinding
The first thing to bear in mind when considering diamond grinding is the level of disruption it can cause. Because it is quite a lengthy process the area to be ground may be out of action for several hours or in some cases days.
Generally speaking, using diamond grinding to restore an old floor is cheaper than having a completely new floor laid. However, you need to check with the firm doing the work how many years the restored floor will last. In some cases, over the long term, having a new floor laid can work out cheaper. |
