Types of Pallets?

Pallets are very useful items that are used in a wide range of industries to transport goods from the factory to the supplier. Pallets need to be strong, durable and affordable and can be made from a number of different materials including wood, plastic, metal and even cardboard.

Wooden Pallets

The traditional style pallet is made from wood as this material is easily to source, lightweight and strong. However these wood pallets are not that durable and are easily damaged. This means that wood pallets are often thrown away after just one or two uses (they can be repaired if not badly damaged). Wood pallets are still the most common material used in pallets today, but although the wood pulp from pallets can be recycled this does represent a vast scale of wastage and some industries have begun to look for new, more robust materials to create pallets from.

Metal Pallets

Metal pallets are more expensive to manufacture than wooden pallets, but they do offer a number of advantages. Metal pallets are very strong and durable and are essential in industries that need to transport very heavy goods. Metal pallets can be used over and over again, and are easy to repair if they get damaged. However as well as being more expensive to make metal pallets are also heavier than wooden pallets and this means higher shipping costs for suppliers.

Plastic Pallets

Injection moulded plastic pallets are cheap to manufacture and are rigid and lightweight. However these pallets are quite brittle and can be easily damage and cannot be repaired. Structural foam moulded pallets are more flexible and robust and are strong enough to be used for quite heavy loads. These pallets cannot be recycled though (although some of the raw materials can be reused) and many end up on landfill sites.

Cardboard Pallets

Cardboard pallets are recyclable and are very cheap to make. An additional benefit is that they can be surprisingly robust and are formed from reinforced corrugated cardboard. They are also lightweight and cheap to transport. Cardboard pallets are not very weatherproof though and cannot be used for heavy goods.

Bespoke Pallets

Pallet producers will also be able to offer bespoke services, which is useful for businesses that need to transport goods that are an unusual size/weight. Bespoke services will be more expensive, but they do mean you can ensure that your products are stored and shipped safely.
