Hair Loss After Pregnancy Explained

Many women notice that their hair grows much more than normal while they are pregnant. It is not so much that it grows longer, more that it gets thicker. Most think that this is their imagination, but in fact they are right. It has been scientifically proven that during pregnancy the rate at which dead hairs fall out slows down and in some cases stops altogether. That is why during pregnancy most women's hair looks better than it ever has before. They keep all their old hair and new hairs are being added to their head all the time meaning that during pregnancy they have more hairs than normal on their head.

Unfortunately, there is a flip side. Hair loss after pregnancy is considerably accelerated meaning that between 2 and 12 weeks after their baby is born a woman's hair can end up looking very thin. This is because all the dead hairs that should have fallen out, but didn't, during the 9 months of pregnancy fall out almost simultaneously. It takes time for new hair growth to catch up and return the population of hairs on a woman's head to normal levels.

Hair Loss After Pregnancy Is Not Uncommon

Hair loss after pregnancy is a lot more common than people realise. The rate at which the loss of old hair slows down varies from woman to woman. This means that some women experience no noticeable changes in the thickness of their hair, whilst for others the change is drastic.

For around 50% of women hair loss after pregnancy is noticeable and for those women it can be quite disturbing even when they know the cause and that their hair loss is not permanent.

The Solution to Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Because hair loss after pregnancy is not permanent the best way to deal with it is to change your hair style a bit and wait for your hair to return to normal. If, however, hair loss is too drastic getting a hair piece made that is designed to blend synthetic hairs with you natural hair is a good solution.
