What Is An Ecological Consultant?

An ecological consultant is the person you would hire when you need an ecological survey carried out to enable a building project to pass through the planning process.

The role of an ecological consultant is to assess the environment by identifying the animals and plants living in a specific area or habitat and the impact any planned changed of use of their habitat will have on them. They are called in for big building projects or where a smaller project is planned that will impact on a protected animal or plant.

Who Needs To Hire an Ecological Consultant?

In the UK most small building projects do not need the services of an ecological consultant. The majority of their work is still carried out for developers who are building roads, housing or industrial units. Farmers and heavy industry also occasionally require the services of an ecological consultant.

Farmers use them for their major building projects or when they want to change the use of land on which protected animals and plants live. Heavy industry will use them when they want to make major changes to their factories as part of the planning process or to answer local objections put up by local residents.

Occasionally an ecological consultant will be asked to draw up a report to help to establish whether a habitat has been damaged in some way. For example if a factory is accused of a chemical spill they may be involved from a fact gathering perspective to assess the validity of the accusation. However, in this case other experts will also be involved.

Types of Ecological Consultant

There are many types of ecological consultants out there. Some simply carry out environment impact assessments as part of the planning application process. An awful lot of these assessments involve tree surveys or wildlife surveys. Others tell firms how to landscape their land to achieve their building project or change of use whilst having minimal physical and visual impact on the surrounding area. Still others are involved in planning ecological developments like wind farms and solar power fields.
