The European Commission forecasts tough times ahead

European Union Commissioner for Economic Affairs Olli Rehn has suggested that there will be stagnation in the economy of the Euro area by the final quarter of 2011. The European Commission has slashed its growth forecasts for the second half of the year. A mere 0.1 per cent growth is now predicted for the last three months of the year, with only 0.2 per cent during the preceding period of three months. This has serious consequences for those British firms hoping to export goods to mainland Europe.

At Cooper Matthews we understand that a firm’s fortunes are often largely dependent on the economic context. A firm has agency, but it cannot always escape the constraints imposed by the economic climate. If demand for goods and services is not sufficient, a firm will be unable to prevent itself from getting into difficulty.

Some people believe that business success is down to the talents of the individual company and a bit of luck. This is far too simplistic a view. In reality, the difference between success and failure can be a narrow one. Which side of the line a company comes out on is the result of a complex array of factors.

When external conditions are poor, it is unsurprising if a firm develops a cash flow problem. It is not always the case that a bank is sympathetic in its response. When business debt accumulates, it is imperative that the directors of the firm address the situation swiftly. Contacting experienced business debt services is a wise move because they can help get a good picture of the problem.

If the business debt analysis shows that the company is in dire straits, various options may still be on the table. Sometimes a phoenix company can be established with some of the firm’s assets. This approach has to be conducted in a way which respects the recently updated regulatory framework.
