Morning After Pills – Emergency Contraceptive for Unprotected Intercourse

Abortions seem to happen almost all over the world which is approximately 115,000 per day. Statistics show that this is about 42 million per year. There are many varieties of Morning after Pills. Some use the hormone Progesterone alone, some use estrogen only and some a mixture of both. They are similar to the hormones used in birth control pills, but more so in a concentrated form. The Morning After Pill prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg, alters the outer covering of the egg to prevent a sperm from penetrating it and alters the lining of the womb so that even if an egg does get fertilized, it cannot attach to the uterus.
The big question is how easily can women get it for their use? All you need to do is visit your local pharmacy. One of the pills is available only on a doctor’s prescription, while the other is available over the counter. It is advisable to undergo a medical examination by a Doctor before taking the morning after pill and to avoid any negative reaction.
Many times, religion plays a significant role in causing any alteration like an abortion to a normal pregnancy. Morning after pill does not cause abortion as it prevents pregnancy in the first place by preventing the fertilization of the egg.
Levonelle is one such emergency contraceptive pill that is easily available with most pharmacists. Levonelle uses the hormone progesterone levonorgestrel. Levonelle works according to the phase of your menstrual cycle that you are running. It has been found to be highly successful, but its use is not advised should your age be above 35. It should also not be sold to girls below 16 years. It should not be used if you are already pregnant.
The latest contraceptive pill available in the market is Ella One. It releases Progesterone and is easily available as a 30mg tablet at many pharmaceutical stores only with a prescription. It may cause side effects like any other contraceptive pills. The best part is that works for up to five days after the unprotected sexual intercourse. But, it is best to take it as early as possible. It should not be taken twice during your menstrual cycle, during pregnancy or if you have any liver / gut disease.
Morning After Pills have high doses of hormones and are not your usual contraceptives. They should be taken on the advice of a Doctor and should NOT be taken if you are already pregnant. |
