Bio Ethanol Fireplaces Explained
|
What are bio ethanol fireplaces?
When it comes to heating alternatives, nothing beats the ambience and beauty of a fireplace. Cozying up with a loved one while cradling a glass of red wine and being mesmerised by the dancing flames sounds like a pretty good way to spend a cold winter’s night if you ask me!
Fireplace owners however, will tell you that the less glamorous side fireplaces involves chopping wood, cleaning up ash, having irritated eyes and smelling like smoke for hours afterwards. Not to mention that many people don’t even have the option of installing a fireplace, such as apartment dwellers, renters and those who live in areas where there are covenants restricting them from having a fireplace (eg. some rainforest areas). Lastly, there is the issue of cost. Fireplaces can be expensive to purchase and there is also the added costs involved of installation and building chimneys and flues to council requirements.
Enter bio ethanol fireplaces. Also referred to as eco fireplaces, alcohol fireplaces, bio fires and everything inbetween, these innovative fireplaces overcome all of these issues and provide a few extra benefits too. Powered purely by bio ethanol (commonly known in Australia as methylated spirits) they are clean burning and odourless so produce no irritating smoke, ash or embers. Furthermore, they don't require any flues, pipes, chimneys or utility connections so they’re an absolute breeze to install.
But do they actually give off any heat I hear you ask? Yes they do! The amount of heat will depend on many factors, such as the ambient temperature in the room at the time, the quality of the fuel used, the size of the room etc… but on average, a 1.5L fireplace will have a thermal output of 2.1 – 2.5 kw/h and heat a room of around 20m2.
Now anyone can enjoy the warmth and ambience of an open fire without the limitations and hassles of a traditional fireplace.
Benefits of bio ethanol fireplaces
These ingenious fireplaces have many benefits:
1. Virtually No Set Up Required
Free standing units are completely portable and require no installation at all – simply place it is a suitable position and away you go. Even the wall mounted units require very little installation and can either be fixed to the wall with a mounting bar or mounted into a wall cavity. There’s no need to allow for fuel lines or chimneys and with no fixed parts or pipes, you are free to take the fireplace with you if you move house.
2. Easy to Use and Maintain
Using these fireplaces couldn't be any easier - there's no need to chop wood, shovel ash or scrub debris clean like with conventional fireplaces. Bio ethanol fireplaces are easy to fill, light and switch off and are practically maintenance free.
3. Environmentally Friendly
These fireplaces are gentle on the environment and use bio ethanol, a liquid fuel derived from renewable raw material such as sugarcane, potatoes and wheat. No harmful emissions are released and the only by-products are water vapour and as little carbon dioxide as we exhale. Bio ethanol is a carbon neutral fuel source so you can use these fireplaces as often as you like guilt-free.
4. Attractive and Stylish
Available in a range of stunning designs, these fireplaces are exquisite works of art in their own right, even when unlit. Made from contemporary glass panels and sleek stainless steel, they are the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. Couple the innovative designs with the beauty of the natural flames when lit and the result is a breathtaking feature that will elevate the ambience of any room.
5. Clean and Odourless
Bio ethanol is clean burning and so produces no smoke or ash. It is also odourless and only upon extinguishing the flame will there be a smell, similar to that of blowing out a candle, and even that dissipates very quickly.
6. Effective Heating Source
Because these fireplaces do not use any chimneys, flues or vents, the heat radiated is retained in the room, ensuring you stay warm and cosy. In fact, the 1.5L fireplaces can produce enough heat to warm a space of up to 20m2 on average.
What next?
Surely by now you’re a bio ethanol fireplace convert! Your next step is to decide what type and style of fireplace you’re after. There are some gorgeous options out there and with such a variety of shapes, colours and sizes available to suit all budgets and tastes, you are bound to find the perfect one for your home.
