What Skills Do I Need?

If you are interested in starting up gym courses then you will need to have a good basic level of fitness. It will also help if you have the following natural abilities:

* Confidence and Leadership - as a fitness trainer/instructor you will need to be able to lead groups of people effectively. This means you will need to be confident and be able to take control of situations easily.

* Organised - Learning to be a fitness instructor is not just about physical activity. You will also have to plan your fitness sessions and make appointments so good organisational skills are essential.

What Will I learn in Gym Courses?

In gym courses you will improve your own basic knowledge of fitness equipment and techniques. You will be shown the latest fitness skills so that you will be able to train and supervise others. A big part of your gym courses will also be safety. Any physical activity can have its risks and you will need to learn how to train others safely. This can include learning about:

* Human anatomy (skeletal and muscle structures)
* Cardiovascular system
* Health and Safety in the Work Place (in relation to gym environments)
* Safe teaching skills
* Effective planning and risk assessment

Once you have passed your gym courses you could be qualified to work in a range of fields including:

* Fitness instructor in a health and fitness centre
* Gym supervisor for a health and fitness centre
* Personal Trainer
* Specialist fitness trainer (working in rehabilitation centres, obesity clinics etc)
