Centrifugal Fan

Industrial products explained: The centrifugal fan

You have probably not given much consideration to the humble centrifugal fan. You may not even know what the word ‘centrifugal’ means. You wouldn’t be alone! However this type of fan is one most commonly used types in industrial applications. Here is an explanation of the centrifugal fan:

Let’s start with the basics; a centrifugal fan gets its name from a centrifugal force. This is a fictitious force (an apparent force which acts on all masses on a non-inertial frame of reference i.e. one which moves like a rotating disk.) A centrifugal force is the effects of inertia that arise in connection with rotation and is manifested as an outward force away from the centre of rotation. A centrifugal fan employs this in order to move air or other gases.

A centrifugal fan contains a fan wheel consisting of a number of blades mounted around a rotating hub inside some casing. Gas flows into one side of the fan wheel, turns at a right angle and accelerates due to centrifugal force as it passes over the fan blades and leaves the fan housing. The technology has been in use for nearly 200 years, mainly in industrial applications, and is common in central heating and cooling systems today.

In terms of centrifugal fan anatomy there are many different variations depending on its function. Firstly there are the fan blade options. There are three variants: Radial, curved backwards and curved forwards. Radial blades (or ribs) are the cheapest to manufacturer and are not easily affected by solid or liquid particles in the air. Backward curving ribs are prone to particulate build ups but offer good operating efficiency when moving gas. Forward curving ribs are sensitive towards minute particles and aerosols but are ideal for high flow areas.

Where can I find a centrifugal fan or a few at a good price?

It is best to source your centrifugal fan from a specialist supplier. One firm which supplies a wide range of fan products ranging from centrifugal fans to extraction fans can be found at Moduflow.co.uk. Visit the company website today for more information.
