Rack Computer

A rack computer also known as a rack-mount server is a computer that is built into a special case. This case sits in a rack instead of being a standalone tower case or desktop computer. The rack computer will be slotted into a framework which is called a rack. This has multiple slots called bays which are each designed to hold a rack computer. They are held in securely with screws. A single rack is designed to hold multiple rack computers one above the other which saves floor space. In a room where rack computers are sited specialist cooling equipment is needed prevent over heating as all the power from the computers in a small space would lead to overheating problems without this.

Rack computers are commonly used in businesses and industry where large amounts of data needs to be stored or to hold a company’s infrastructure if they are a web based business. Most people tend to think of massive rooms filled from floor to ceiling with rows and rows of racks and rack computers when you talk about servers but many small businesses also use servers. You can get smaller wall mounted or floor mounted racks that hold a couple of rack computers which will centralise all the computing equipment in one place. Rack mount cabinets for rack computers can really help with space issues in smaller business premises. As rack computers can be noisy with needing fans to cool them they are best placed in a rack either in a separate room or choosing rack mounts with side panels and a door to reduce noise levels for working staff.

Rack computers are best kept in a secure room or a rack with a lockable door to ensure they are kept safe and no one can tamper with them. As they are such a vital part of many peoples businesses they need to be kept in a safe place and out of harm’s way. Rack computers are commonly placed in an industry standard 19 inch rack mount but with space at a premium for most businesses smaller rack mounts are becoming more widely available for rack computers.
