Mel Gibson - The Great Embattled Ex-Star

The name Mel Gibson may have been a very catchy byword in the past two decades, but after his Passion, things didn't seem to turn out well anymore. With his reputation shredded and his career smashed on the rocks, there was at least a semblance of closure in the recent custody and financial settlement with his ex-girlfriend. The only ones benefiting from Gibson nowadays are the media out for its usual celebrity gossip.
It seems an Oscar Award is not a protection against suffering. In fact, it is the high pedestal from which so many good and talented celebrities have taken a big fall. What with his bad habits and court cases, Gibson has indeed fallen from grace. It does help that his friend Jodie Foster still carries on his banner and supports him in his darkest hours. Still, she was not able to help his latest film The Beaver from restoring his place of glory in Hollywood. How the mighty have fallen.
After all these, however, the dispute between Gibson and his ex-girlfriend, which even birthed a criminal case, has finally been settled. After much celebrity gossip and lengthy negotiations, the terms of the settlement were finally concluded with Russian national Oksana Grigorieva. It is still not clear what these terms were, for they were not publicly revealed. Even the custody of their infant daughter remains in question in the public's mind.
This case has been going on for more than a year. Grigorieva, a musician, has supposedly received from the actor a multimillion-dollar mansion, a car, and dollars in the thousands every month. Still, trouble ensued, for Gibson was charged in 2010 for misdemeanor and domestic battery against Grigorieva. Gibson pleaded no contest and not guilty. Recently, Gibson has finished his judge-ordered community service as a volunteer in Guatemala for a charity for children.
Gibson's personal life indeed has become a mess; with the media, a celebrity gossip circus. Things became especially nasty when racist and sexist rants made by Gibson were recorded and publicly leaked. It was preliminarily admitted as evidence, but was no longer used in the custody battle that ensued. It seemed that Gibson's mouth frequently gets him in trouble; that incriminating recording in Grigorieva's case was preceded by a deputy's revelation of Gibson's sexist and anti-Semitic rants when he was arrested in 2006 for DUI.
Fifty-five year-old Gibson also recently concluded a settlement for divorce with Robyn, his wife for 28 years. This has been largely conducted privately, in contrast to Gibson's much publicized legal fight against Grigorieva. Gibson should have been happy with the Russian musician, but then things started to turn for the worse after their child's birth.
It seems that Gibson is better off speaking through a puppet; at least no beaver in recorded history has ever drunk or been caught with a foul and racist mouth. Audiences do not agree, however; they didn't buy Gibson's puppeteering career in the big screen, despite Foster's on- and offscreen support. He's probably just better off changing his life. This latest series of brushes with the law should convince him of a long-delayed change of character. |
