Dental CPD

What is Dental CPD?

Dental CPD: The Facts

Dental CPD (continuing professional development) is a way of describing an activity or course which is beneficial and developmental to the education and training of qualified dentists. It can include time that dentists spend studying in their free time or professional development courses that they attend in order to improve their performance and knowledge of dentistry. Dental CPD is a requirement of all dentists and this is an issue that is regulated by the General Dental Council who brought Dental CPD into being as a way of ensuring the continuing safe practice of dentistry and as a way of promoting the development of new techniques in the public arena. Dental CPD is compulsory for all dentists in the UK and also for dental care professionals who can also benefit from ongoing training and the benefits that this can bring.

Dental CPD for dentists

Some examples of activities which would be classed a dental CPD include the following.

* Multimedia learning platforms
* Specialist courses
* Lectures
* Private study time
* Distance courses
* Specialist society meetings where lectures are held

All Dental CPD that dentists intend to submit as part of their study should be identifiable as an activity which has improved understanding of dental techniques or care and it should also be an activity of which dentists can provide documentary evidence of. There are three areas of study which are though especially important with regards to dental CPD and these are known to be directly beneficial to dentists learning. They include the ongoing development of medical emergencies and how to respond, disinfection and also decontamination and radiography and protection. These subjects are thought to be important enough to be given extra care whilst undertaking dental CPD. Dental CPD is a vital part of dentistry today and helps to keep the dentistry in the UK at the high level we currently enjoy. Without dental CPD it would be difficult for some dentists to maintain the expected levels of care which are so important to the public and which in some cases can actually save lives.
