Underfloor heating systems are effective

In the UK underfloor heating systems are a relatively new option. Many will have come across this in hotels or in villas and houses abroad, but in the UK central heating has been the norm for domestic use.

What is underfloor heating?

In the early days of underfloor heating it was a system of large bore pipes laid under the non-concrete floor of a room with the heat being provided either from the central heating system, or from a separate boiler. This rather archaic system has now been replaced by much smaller bore pipes which can effectively be laid at regular intervals into the flooring material to ensure a regular spread of heat. The heat is provided by specially designed heat pumps. These pumps will push the hot water through these pipes, but also serve to minimize the water temperature.

When a new building is being created the flooring that is initially laid, which will probably be chipboard or plywood, will be uplifted and replaced by specially designed panels that will have precut channels to accommodate the small bore pipes. The panels are a direct replacement for the flooring that previously existed. As with electric wires that are buried in the wall, it is essential that the pipes can be located should there be a need for repair. A current finder or a metal detector locates electric wires and the some principal is used for these micro bore pipes. A thin sheet of aluminum is laid over the pipes and then a protective layer of plywood or similar material is overlaid so that a final floor covering can be placed on the floor.

Cost effectiveness

Energy conservation is now an important matter and underfloor heating is both cost effective and energy efficient. There is an equal spread of heat and, with the opportunity to thermostatically control the heat, and with timing controls also available, the costs can be limited.

Uses

Underfloor heating can be used in all rooms of the house but is certainly beneficial in bathrooms and kitchens that may have stone or ceramic floors. It will also be useful in communal areas of apartment blocks.
