To neuter your cat or not to neuter

It is an old wives tale that an adult female cat should be allowed to have one litter of kittens before neutering. More and more cats are left to roam the streets and cat owners end up having to find homes for each kitten or pass them to a rescue centre. Many un-neutered males that have not had important vaccinations against diseases can carry viruses which may be passed on to female cats.

An indoor cat can get out at any time, so neutering is one way to help a molly avoid the frustration of being in season and the unwelcome attentions of a male cat. Nutrition for a cat that has been neutered has always been an issue for cat owners. A pet diet with quality balanced cat food in smaller portions will reduce the problem of worrying about obesity in a cat. .

However if you do not keep an eye on portion control and include your kitty treats when totalling up the amount of food given to a cat, it can become overweight posing a real risk to his health. When a visit to your local vet after your cat's neutering is due, ask him to weigh your cat and give you advice about its diet, and how to check out your cat’s body for signs of him being overweight.

A vet will show you how to examine under your cats belly, his hind legs and ribs for any signs of an unwanted roll of fat. Cat nutrition is important to cats whether they have been neutered or not. Feeding your cat with quality balanced cat food will keep him lean and healthy with a shiny coat and bright eyes. At Hills Pets we have a wide rang of balanced pet food including our Science Plan for neutered cats.
