Select the Right Shooting Target at the Range

Most of us don't get nearly the amount of range time that we want. When we do finally get to go, we should be picking the best shooting targets to make the time as effective as possible.

You should have an idea of what you want to do at the range before you get there. Are you going just to have fun shooting with friends or do you have a specific skill that you want to improve? Do you need to work on fundamentals like trigger control, stance or grip? Do you want to practice shooting multiple shots? How about reloads or malfunction clearing? A logbook like the American Sharpshooter LDR System Logbook is a great resource to help you figure out what you need to practice. With a logbook you will track all your shooting sessions, so you can quickly determine what skill you haven't practiced lately.

When you do get to the range, you need to keep in mind that not all shooting targets are created equal. That's why you want to have a game plan when you go shooting. You want to pick the right shooting target for the job.

If you are just hitting the range with a group of friends who have a mix of skills, you probably just need a piece of paper to put holes through. For a range trip like that, a few of those picture shooting targets, like zombie targets, are probably good for the job. You aren't going to increase your own skills at all, but combat accuracy, speed, even target accuracy aren't that important in a range trip like that. You're all just there to have a good time.

If you are hitting the range to increase your skills, you'll need a shooting target that has more to offer. You'll need a shooting target that will work specific skills and give you quick feedback on your accuracy. You should avoid shooting targets that have large, fairly undefined spaces such as silhouettes or those zombie targets. Pick targets that allow you to shoot at multiple places on the target so you can work your drills a few times per target.

The American Sharpshooter shooting targets are a great option. These targets are designed for shooters who are going to the range to increase their skills. Each target is imprinted with four drills created specifically for the given target. One of those drills will be for shooting with a shooting partner so you aren't just taking turns shooting. The targets are also overlaid with an accuracy grid so shooters can quickly see how accurate they are.

Remember, when do you finally get to go to the range, plan your trip. Know why you are going and then pick the best shooting target for the job. Stay safe and have a good time!
