What dog crate should I use?

The secure carriage of a dog in whatever method of travel you are using is vital to the dog’s health and well-being. The crates can be made of wood or stainless steel or other metals, but above all, need to be secure, have the correct ventilation, be able to be transported safely and be in accordance with the freight carriers rules and regulations if applicable.

With the growing ease with which dogs can now be transported within the EU due to the issuing of a pet passport, the need for cages has now increased.

Travel by Plane

If you wish to transport a dog by plane then the airline’s agent will dictate the type of cage they require and the strength that it should be, Each cage needs not only to be of a given size but also needs to have a relevance to the size, weight and strength of the individual dog.

A wooden cage can be made to exact specifications and may suit some breeds better but if the dog has a tendency to chew then maybe this is not suitable.

A metal cage will suit almost all dogs and will allow for a good flow of air for the dog. The cage can easily be transported and will in almost all cases be lighter than a wooden crate,

For toy dogs it is possible to have a plastic crate that may well be used as the dogs kennel at home, and this will give the dog greater sense of security and safety.

Transporting dogs in your car is now a popular pastime and many people have steel crates designed to the shape and size of the rear of an estate car. This will allow for the dog to travel in safety whilst preventing it from jumping around and distracting the driver.

Lastly he carriage of show dogs is an important issue, as they need to arrive at the exhibition centre unstressed. The better the quality of the cage and the space they can have to stretch out the better it is.
