Turning sixteen is a very special moment; shouldn't sweet sixteen cakes reflect this? Many parents just pick an ordinary, sometimes even deep frozen cake from the supermarket(if at all). A little more effort will make this day so much more special for your youngster, this moment will never be forgotten.
How difficult is it?
The biggest question is off course, should you go for a quality cake from the bakery or should you make it yourself.
In truth, this is going to depend on your cake-making skills as well as the kind of birthday party you are having for your teen.
When you know how to bake cakes, it will mainly depend on the time you have available, in any case you have to remember that this day has much impact on your teen;if they are having friends over for the party, what the friends say and think about the cake is going to mean a lot to them, and while a hand-made sheet cake may have been fine when they were five, it might not go over so well now.
If you choose to buy a cake from the bakery, there are several roads you can take.
You can choose from a pre-made cake (such as those produced by a grocery store) and tailor it yourself with writing or decorations, but if you really want to make the day special, you can have a cake tailor-made for your teen.
Tips for Awesome Sweet Sixteen Cakes
- Know Your Teen! What are their interests and hobbies? What are their favorite colors, TV shows and flavors? Even if you are not making the cake yourself you will need to be able to tell the baker what sort of a cake you are looking for. Make sure you get this information right, because otherwise your good intentions could get obviously get a completely wrong effect.
- Choose a Theme! If your sweet sixteen birthday party has a theme - make sure that the cake stays in tune with the party itself, this will give it a sense of continuity.
- Let Your Teen Choose! When many things are already orgnaised, leave a few things to choose for your teenager, even simple things like choosing the color or flavor. Maybe even choosing a particular or preferred bakery or other adress can be one of the options.
- Steer Clear of Kid Themes! Whatever you do, don't choose cartoon characters or any other 'kid' themes. The opinion of the invited friends is in this case more important then the true interests, so be careful.
Ideas for the Perfect Cake
When you notice your youngster is not interested in being part of the organizing or when you want to keep it secret for a suprise element, you could stay with more basic but still sophisticated decorations with some bold shapes and colors, such as bright stripy or dotted patterns and such.
When the party will be more intimate at home with a smaller amount of friends, it can be really nice to make (or get) a collection of cakes; one for each teen attending the party. The sweet sixteen cakes can be all the same flavor, but you can decorate each cake to suit the individual teen.
Another variation is using cupcakes, which are perfect for this as well! When you want to keep the cost lower, it is probaly best to make your own cupcakes. When using cupcakes, there are so many ways to personalise them and make these (extra) sweet sixteen series of cakes stick out.
Regardless of what you choose; homemade or bakery; basic or extravagant; One last thing to remember, the day should be completely around the teen whose birthday is being celebrated, so the cake can be the crown on this special day. |
